OBJECTIVE_PROSTHETICS

The work presented for the IONION Arts Centre SEAS Triangular Exhibition was a series of three seats, titled: Figura 1. | Figura 2. | Figura 3. These seats are design_art objects that began from intuitive explorations of objectual materiality (meaning derived from an object) and spatial shapes. Being drawn to the pertinent remains of history and time in Kefalonia island; waste, trash, and abandoned objects, a fascination grew towards these lonely and discarded nostalgic objects. The objects themselves, began to speak about the materiality of time and the prevalence of decomposition post destruction.

What are the possibilities that lay within speculating objects as bodies? Does this empathy towards the material provide answers or perspective towards the immaterial? Should we begin to speculate on objects prior to implementation in humans? What is the expectant properties of a body, living and non-living? Does the possibility to address objects speculatively, in regards to their accordance, purpose, utility, function and design allow us to further understand a thing?

Through such speculative questioning, my interest was to address the expectations we place on objects as if they were regarded as bodies. Iaim to challenge the pre-conceived notions that we place on objects and materiality. Working beyond an objects material purpose, both functional and aesthetically may allow us to attain a deeper relationship with the embedded possibilities in thingness. If an object is regarded with the same empathetic perspectives that a living body does, would our relationship to objects change? Would we then be more considerate of their historic impact and possibility for re_use.

STEEL SHELF

DYNAMIC RYHTYMS

A creation on the cusp of sculpture and object. I am interested in merging the sculpture and design milieus to co_create objects that are not solely utilitarian, yet boarder as sculptures. This particular design was developed as a sequence to the previous steel sculptural work, adopting colours, material weight, form, and construction methods. The main design considerations for the work, were balance, rhythm, and choreographic materiality.

sculpture_steel

Inspired by Japanese philosophy and calligraphic methods of expression, this sculpture is a physical three dimensional depiction of the soul. The project brief extended to an exploration of the body, through the creation of a sculpture in the round. For this sculpture the material body was eliminated to purely represent the immaterial counterpart, the soul. A juxtaposition of materiality and meaning, the demanding material properties of the steel are crafted and manipulated to create a floating, light, ephemeral and delicate representation of the soul, through calligraphic and sculptural aesthetics.
